Domains and DNS
Domain Name System (DNS)
The Domain Name System (DNS) is the naming system for Internet domain recognition. DNS is used by computers or other Internet using devices or private network system users.
The Domain Name System is the phone book for the Internet.
Your DNS translates your Domain Name to your associated numerical Internet Protocol (IP) address (i.e. www.anywebsite.com as an example, could translate for anywebsite.com as IP address 198.20.236.126). Your IP locates your Domain on the Internet.
DNS translates specific machine-read IP addresses into human-friendly Domain Names.

Updating Your DNS
Your DNS can be changed and quickly updated. These DNS edits allow a Domain on the Internet to change an IP address without affecting the end-user (visitor).
After DNS changes, website visitors continue to use the same Domain Name and are still directed to your website. The end-user enters the Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) into their browser and are directed to the appropriate Domain and e-mail addresses while the DNS actually locates the website and their website services.
DNS Assigns an IP Address
The Domain Name System assigns Domain Names and their IPs addresses by designating your hosting nameservers to your Domain.
The Domain Name System also specifies the required functionality (protocol) of the DNS database service. This DNS protocol allows data structures (your website is a data structure) and data communication to be exchanged on the Internet.
DNS and Namesevers
Internet hosting nameservers communicate the stored DNS records for a domain name. This stored record information includes address (A or AAAA) records, nameserver (NS) records and mail exchanger (MX) records. Your hosting nameserver responds to queries against these database records.
DNS and WHOIS and Reverse Look-Up
When someone wants your website information records, they query the WHOIS registration database. This database contains records for DNS nameservers, the domain owner and other database record information. There is also specific domain name, hosting nameserver and IP address information that can be queried using a reverse IP Look-Up function.
