Email Basics
The following helps are provided for a basic understanding of the terms and descriptions involved with your website's email accounts.
With your new website hosting package, initially, there are no email accounts set. Click here for helps on setting email accounts for your use with Webmail.
Email Address
An email address identifies an email mailbox to which email messages are delivered. Each email address is unique.
An email address identifies the mailbox where email can be sent with each email address consisting of a local part, an @ symbol and then your website domain.
Email addresses have the format: example (the local part), the @ symbol and then the domain name to form johndoe [at symbol] yourdomain [dot] com (without spaces) for johndoe@yourdomain.com.
Email Mailbox
An email mailbox is the portion of your website's hosting package network where email is received, stored and retrieved. Each email address identifies their corresponding email mailbox. Each website account package has a specified number of available email mailboxes.
Webmail
Webmail (or web-based email) is the email client application that provides for you an online access to your email accounts. When accessing your emails using Webmail, you login to your email account using your email address and password.
Email Forwarding
Email forwarding or an email forward, is an email address function that relays email from one email account to another email account. Email reaching a receiving email account (with the forwarding function enabled) is rerouted to the destination email account. The forwarding function can also reroute emails to more than on receiving email account.
Forwarding gives you the ability to create a receiving email address for a reroute to another email address or for a reroute to an external email account. Forwards do not store email messages. You can create an unlimited number of forwards and you can also create forwards from one email address to multiple receiving email addresses.
Non-existent Email Mailboxes
Email sent to non-existent mailboxes on your domain sometimes occurs as an error and are usually the result of misspellings or spammers with malicious intent.
